What is a Glazier?
A glazier or glass worker is a person who installs glass in windows, storefronts, display cases, and skylights to create unique designs or reduce the need for artificial lighting. A glazier risks cuts from tools and glass and, if not careful, can fall from ladders and scaffolding.
What Does a Glazier Do?
- Follows blueprints or specifications for size, color, thickness, and type of glass to be used
- Removes any broken or old glass before installing replacement glass
- Cuts glass to the specified shape and size
- Installs or makes sashes or moldings for glass installation
- Fastens glass into frames or sashes with clips, moldings, or other types of fasteners
- Adds weather seal or putty around pane edges to seal joints
Glaziers specialize in installing different kinds of glass products. On commercial interior projects, glass workers install items like decorative room dividers, heavy etched windows, or security windows.
Also, glazing projects may involve replacing storefront windows for auto dealerships, banks, supermarkets, and so on. Frequently, for large-scale construction jobs, glass is pre-cut and mounted on frames at a manufacturer shop or a contractor’s shop. The finished glass arrives at the site ready for glaziers to position and securing into place. Using cranes or hoists with suction cups, glaziers lift heavy, large parts of glass for installation. In instances where the glass is not secure inside the frame, workers may attach aluminum and steel frames to the building and then secure the glass with clips, moldings, or other types of fasteners.
The Workplace of a Glazier
As in any other construction trade, the work is physically demanding. Glass workers spend most of the day bending, standing, or stretching, and they often have to lift and maneuver heavy, cumbersome materials, such as large glass plates.
