Interior Glass Door Types
Laminated and tempered glass options are available for interior glass doors and interior glass wall panels. Both laminated glass and tempered glass offer aftermarket recyclability. Laminated glass is considered a “safety” glass. It is made up of multiple glass panels that are divided by a layer of PVB (polyvinyl burial). If the laminated glass breaks, the pieces adhere to the PVB layer, making it a safer option for interior installations. Tempered glass more robust than laminated against direct impacts, but the laminated glass is usually a more secure option. However, new technology now allows for tempering the glass and then laminating to make the glass both stronger and more secure. However, this added protection adds a cost increase.
Laminated Glass Doors
- Interior films add increased acoustics and privacy
- Clean and clear consistent finish of glass facings can be tempered with etching
- The film can be printed with a wide range of color and designs
Tempered Glass
- Highly resistant to temperature changes and impact
- Limited to satin or clear etching
- Digital direct-to-glass printing (permanently print logos designs, among others, onto the glass)
Interior Glass Door Types
Space and design typically determine interior glass door types. If there is limited clearance into a room or if a door will open into a busy walkway, sliders may be the best option compared to a traditional swing door.
Swing Door
These type of doors swing out or into a room. They could be single or double doors.
- Door pulls or door knobs can be installed
- Locking mechanisms can be included
- They can be mounted on hinges on one side of the opening
- Transom or full-height doors are available
Slider Doors
These door options slide away from the door opening and into the wall. They are also offered as single or double doors.
- Allow for full access.
- Can be locked.
- Ideal for new construction.
- Frees up other passageways.
- Reduced clearance for closing and opening (reduces hallway traffic interruption).
Frames and Finish Alternatives for Interior Glass Doors
Interior glass doors can be with frames or frameless that will match moveable glass walls specified or the moveable partition. The frames can be small, consisting of only four percent of the overall material used in the opening. This minimalist approach provides aesthetics, ease of recyclability, lightweight durability, and more daylighting to assist in reaching LEED criteria. The primary upper extrusion that holds the glass panels is principally made of aluminum, and JRB Service offers a vast range of finishes, from clear anodized to any RAL color finish to suit the look and feel of your interior design scheme.
