Curtain Walls and Curtain Systems
First things first: curtain walls are not the same as curtain systems. Although they use the same components, they are different. Curtain systems utilize a set of pre-defined parameters to produce curtain walling with set centers for the mullions. Using curtain walls along with curtain grids and mullions is a much more intuitive, creative process.
What is a Curtain Wall?
A curtain wall is a thin, aluminum-framed wall, including in-fills of glass, metal panels, or thin stone. The framing is connected to the building structure and does not carry the roof loads or the floor of the building. The curtain wall’s gravity and wind loads are transferred to the building structure, typically at the floor line.
Curtain Grids
The curtain wall can host curtain grids, which can be placed using a specialized tool.
Mullions
Once the curtain wall holds one or more curtain grid lines installed onto it, the grid lines can then host mullions.
Curtain Panel
A curtain panel is an area that is limited by curtain grid lines. When you start with just a single run of curtain wall, the entire wall is one large panel. As you start separating the wall by adding grid lines, you are immediately forming more panels. By default, each of these panels is “glass.”
All in all, the curtain wall frequently constitutes one part of a building’s wall system. Precise integration with adjacent elements such as other wall claddings, roofs, and the base of wall details is required for a successful installation.
