Glazing, Glass, and Insulation

When it comes to windows, glazing just means “glass.” Glazing is mounted in the window and held in place by glazing putty and a frame that holds it in place. There are companies which offer various options for window glazing. Double or triple glazed windows create more insulation, reducing heat loss through the windows. Plus, glass can be tinted to keep out sunlight or coated with a clear film that considerably increases energy efficiency.

Glazing System Types

Any glazing system can be used with structural glass facades. Take a look at the options.

FRAMED

Framed systems support the glass unit continuously along two or four sides. Conventional unitized curtain wall systems are seldom used with structural glass facades, though there are many variations.

FRAMELESS

Frameless systems use glass panes that are fixed to a structural system at discrete points, usually near the corners of the glass panel (point-fixed). The glass is directly supported without the use of perimeter framing elements. Glass used in point-fixed applications is typically heat-treated.

STICK

Stick-built glass system is a method of curtain wall construction where much of the assembly and fabrication takes place in the field. Mullions – a vertical element that forms a division between units of a door, screen, or window, or is used decoratively – are delivered as unassembled “sticks” to the building site, and they can also be prefabricated. Then, the mullions are installed onto the building face to create a frame for the glass, which is installed subsequently.

VENEER

Some truss systems are designed with an outer cord of rectangular or square tubing, and may include transom components of the similar material, presenting a uniform flat grid installed to high level of tolerances. Such a system can allow continuous support to minimal or simplistic off-the-shelf glazing systems, mixing relatively excellent economy with high transparency. A veneer glazing system is a stick-built curtain wall system built for continuous support and representing a greater level of system integration with resulting efficiencies. Variations can include 4-sided capture, 2-sided capture, structurally glazed, and unitized systems.
